A new analysis raises alarms about the reliability and timeliness of U.S. public-health surveillance data. Researchers report that a large share of once-routinely updated databases maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stopped updating or experienced major delays during 2025, undermining one of the country’s core tools for tracking outbreaks and guiding prevention.

The study, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, found that 46% of the included CDC databases had halted updates, with most paused for more than six months. The authors report that the problem disproportionately affected systems tracking vaccinations and vaccine-preventable diseases such as influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, while other paused databases covered infectious diseases and drug-overdose deaths.
Why data delays matter in real-world response
Public-health surveillance is not just an academic resource: it guides day-to-day decisions by state and local health departments, hospitals, and clinicians. When a dataset that typically updates on a predictable schedule stops updating without explanation, officials may lose early warning signals that an outbreak is accelerating, that vaccination coverage is slipping in specific communities, or that a new pattern of illness is emerging.
The researchers and accompanying commentary warn that gaps in routine updates can slow both individual- and population-level protective actions. Without current data, health departments may have less ability to prioritize where to deploy vaccination campaigns, where to target messaging, or where to prepare hospitals for surges.
Transparency standards and the question of accountability
The study also argues that minimum transparency standards are needed: clear notices when a database is delayed, explanations for the interruption, and realistic timelines for resuming publication. Even when a paused dataset remains publicly accessible online, users may not realize it is stale—creating a risk that outdated information continues to be used in reports, policymaking, and media coverage.
As of early December 2025, the authors report that almost none of the paused databases had resumed regular updating. The findings have added urgency to debates about staffing, funding, and policy priorities for federal public health agencies heading into 2026.
