The demand followed the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis.

Democratic leaders argued that the killing, coming after another recent federal shooting death, reflected a breakdown in oversight and an unacceptable approach to domestic enforcement. They framed the issue as both a public-safety emergency and a constitutional concern, asserting that DHS leadership had not met the standards required for accountability.

In the House, the push gained momentum as lawmakers signed onto impeachment articles and publicly challenged DHS’s handling of the episode. The debate has been fueled not only by the shooting itself but by contradictory public narratives about what happened, including early descriptions of the victim that critics said were unsupported or misleading.

Trump defended Noem and praised her performance, but the political pressure is no longer confined to one faction. The administration also shifted operational leadership in Minneapolis, placing border czar Tom Homan more directly in charge on the ground. Supporters portrayed the move as tightening command and restoring credibility; opponents described it as an attempt to manage the optics without answering the underlying questions about rules of engagement, accountability, and the use of force.

Impeachment of a cabinet secretary is exceedingly rare, which is part of why the threat itself matters. Even if it stalls, the escalation signals a widening political fight over immigration enforcement inside U.S. cities, and it suggests that DHS’s leadership structure and tactics could remain a dominant issue through the coming months.
