According to reporting by The Verge, Microsoft shipped an emergency update to resolve shutdown issues tied to the January 2026 security update on some Windows 11 version 23H2 machines. Roughly a week later, a second out-of-band patch was issued, aimed at fixing crashes and unresponsiveness in cloud apps such as OneDrive and Dropbox on newer Windows 11 versions, including 24H2 and 25H2.

Compounding the disruption, Microsoft has also been investigating reports of devices failing to boot after installing the January update, with some systems hitting a UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME stop code.
