Ethiopia has declared its first outbreak of Marburg virus disease over, closing a critical chapter in a response that required intensive surveillance and strict infection control. The declaration followed 42 consecutive days without new confirmed cases, the standard benchmark used to ensure transmission chains have been interrupted.

Health officials and WHO described a response built around rapid detection, isolation, supportive treatment, and contact tracing designed to prevent silent spread. During the outbreak, Ethiopia recorded 14 confirmed cases—nine of them fatal—and five recoveries, along with additional deaths treated as probable cases. The outbreak’s impacts were amplified by infections among health workers, a risk that underscores why protective protocols are central in hemorrhagic fever events.

Marburg spreads through close contact with bodily fluids of infected people or contaminated surfaces, and it can cause severe illness marked by fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially deadly bleeding. Because there is no widely licensed vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, public health practice focuses heavily on containment: identifying cases fast, protecting caregivers, tracing contacts, and sustaining community communication to reduce exposure risks.

WHO’s Ethiopia update detailed how the response mobilized expertise across surveillance, laboratory work, case management, logistics, and risk communication. Contacts were identified and monitored, and facilities strengthened infection prevention measures to limit healthcare-associated transmission—one of the most dangerous accelerants in outbreaks of this type.

The end-of-outbreak declaration is a success, but it is also a reminder that readiness must remain high. Officials say continued vigilance—especially in areas that experienced transmission and in regions with bat reservoirs—will be important to detect future spillovers early and avoid a repeat of the emergency conditions that can overwhelm local care systems.
