The study reviewed the CDC’s public data catalog and examined dozens of databases used by clinicians, researchers and local health departments to monitor health threats. The authors reported that nearly half of the qualifying datasets had paused updates, often for more than six months, and that only a very small number resumed updating by early December 2025.

Vaccination and respiratory disease data hit hardest

The largest disruption was concentrated in immunization and vaccine-preventable disease tracking. Many paused databases collected nationwide information related to vaccines and illnesses such as influenza, COVID-19 and RSV—categories where timeliness is critical for targeting outreach, adjusting recommendations, and spotting geographic pockets of vulnerability.

Other affected datasets tracked infectious disease trends and drug overdose deaths, raising concern that delays could impair both outbreak response and broader public health planning.
